About Us

Our love for hummingbirds goes back four generations. Growing up in central Kentucky, we were obsessed with the outdoors wildlife. Feeding the wildlife, and especially the birds, has been such an obsession that the cost of doing so was always included in our monthly budget!  We’ve always been frugal when it comes to feeding the birds however, from making our own sugar nectar, peanut butter and seed in oranges and even homemade suet blocks.

We believe that it’s our God given duty to help care for the precious creatures of our planet and to enjoy the entertainment that comes with it. And the hummingbirds are some of the most entertaining and inexpensive creatures to feed.

We recently had a male move into our area and he staked his claim on, not only our feeders, but the trees they hang from. Every morning during coffee, he sits on the branch closest to our living room window, looks in at us and does his little chitter chatter as if he’s talking to us. This has become our morning routine. He preens himself, chatters away to the other birds, or because he’s just happy. I don’t know. He guards his feeders, chases away would be thieves and comes back to sit on his branch and continue guarding his small kingdom. His morning visits and antics have been so amusing, we decided to name him. We call him Rufio, named after one of the lost boys in the movie Hook. Every time he chases off another hummer that is either a rival male or a female that isn’t one of his, we cheer him on saying, ‘Rufio! Rufio! It still makes me smile as I write this. And so now I see why our family’s past generations have been in love with the hummingbird.
